WA Lookup workflow illustration for WhatsApp Avatar Check: Checking Avatar Availability for Contact Records
A visual overview of the workflow discussed in this WA Lookup article.

A practical guide to running a WhatsApp avatar check on contact records and reading a missing avatar correctly.

A WhatsApp avatar check tells you whether a submitted number has a profile picture available at the time of the check. It is a supplementary field next to the registration signal. A number with no avatar is not necessarily unregistered, so the avatar result should never be used on its own to delete or demote a contact record.

What a WhatsApp avatar check actually returns

WA Lookup offers three realtime WhatsApp checks: a registration check, an avatar check, and a business-account check. The avatar check runs the registration check and adds avatar availability, plus a link to the picture when one is available. The link field can be empty, so contact tools should treat an empty value as "no avatar available" rather than as an error.

The result is a snapshot. It describes what was available when the check ran. Profile pictures can be changed, removed, or hidden by the account holder's own privacy settings, which are controlled in WhatsApp itself (see the WhatsApp privacy overview). A stored result is therefore a dated observation, not a permanent attribute of the contact.

Avatar availability is also not proof of identity. A picture can show a logo, a landscape, or a person other than the number's owner. Nothing in the check confirms who is behind the account, whether they consented to contact, or whether they will reply.

How to read a missing avatar

When the avatar field comes back false, there are several ordinary explanations: the account holder never set a picture, removed it, or limits who can see it. None of these means the number is unregistered. Registration is reported separately, so always read the registration result first and the avatar result second.

Registration result Avatar result Reasonable reading
Registered Available Account present; a picture was visible at check time
Registered Not available Account present; no visible picture. Keep the contact
Not registered Not available No account at check time. Route to another channel
Undetermined (non-zero business code) None The check did not complete. Retry later; do not record it as unregistered

Only completed checks should write registered or unregistered into the record. Both completed outcomes are charged, so avoid repeating checks on numbers whose status you already hold.

Where avatar data helps in contact records

Used carefully, avatar availability is one input among several for data hygiene and segmentation:

  • Record completeness. Mark whether a visible picture existed at check time, together with the check date, so later reviews know how old the signal is.
  • Prioritising manual review. A sales team working a short list can sort registered contacts with a visible avatar ahead of registered contacts without one for human follow-up. This is a workflow preference, not a quality verdict.
  • Duplicate investigation. When two CRM records share a number, differing avatar results taken on different dates are a reason to review them, not a reason to merge or delete automatically.

Avoid using avatar availability to infer age, location, or personal traits. The check is meant to inform workflow routing, not to profile individuals, and the avatar link should not be copied into marketing material without a lawful basis.

Running the check on a list

For a few numbers, run the check from the dashboard or the realtime API. Submit each number in international format with its country code and choose the avatar product. The same account balance covers the dashboard, the REST API, and the MCP server, so no separate setup is needed to compare the checks.

For a larger set, the dashboard's Realtime Batch Check tab accepts pasted numbers in one session, and the API's synchronous multi request handles a limited group per call. For lists far beyond that, upload a file as an asynchronous bulk task for the avatar product, wait for processing, and download the result file; per-product limits apply, so confirm them in the current API documentation before sizing a job.

Normalise formats and remove duplicates before submitting. Every completed result is charged, so cleaning the list first avoids paying twice for the same number.

Before storing avatar data, decide who may see it and why you hold it. A short internal checklist helps:

  1. Record the purpose of the check (data hygiene, segmentation) in your own documentation.
  2. Store the availability flag and check date; store the picture link only if a defined process needs it.
  3. Do not treat a visible avatar as consent to be contacted.
  4. Respect opt-outs and local messaging rules regardless of any check result.
  5. Re-check on a schedule that matches how often your data changes rather than on every CRM view.

FAQ

Does a missing WhatsApp avatar mean the number is not on WhatsApp?

No. A number can be registered with no picture set or with the picture hidden by privacy settings. Read the registration result first; avatar availability only supplements it.

How can teams store avatar check results in a CRM?

Save the availability flag with the check date and the selected check type. Keep the picture link only when a defined process needs it, since pictures can change or disappear.

Can an avatar be used to confirm who owns a number?

No. It is a platform-side availability signal at check time.

What should happen when an avatar check is undetermined?

An undetermined check is not a completed result. Retry later and avoid recording it as unregistered or as having no avatar.
