Illustration of a phone number lookup returning registration status and a WhatsApp profile photo
The avatar check returns registration status together with the public profile photo, when one is available.

WA Lookup's avatar check takes one phone number and returns, in the same response, whether it is registered on WhatsApp and the public profile photo it uses — without saving the contact or opening WhatsApp.

In the WhatsApp app, you usually see someone's profile photo only after saving their number, and only if their privacy settings allow it. In a business workflow — a new lead, a support ticket, a delivery contact — saving every number to a phone is slow and leaves contacts you do not need.

The real-time avatar check (ws_avatar) answers the question directly: is this number on WhatsApp, and which public profile photo does it show right now? This guide explains how it works, what it returns, and the features that come with it.

How a real-time photo lookup works

  1. Submit one number in international format, for example +12345678900. The + is optional; see ITU-T Recommendation E.164.
  2. WA Lookup checks registration and the profile photo in the same request.
  3. Read both answers in the same response — no queue, no polling, no callback.

Run it wherever it suits you, with the same check and the same balance:

  • The homepage demo — switch to Avatar Check; no account needed, limited per day.
  • The dashboard — open Realtime check and select WhatsApp Avatar Check. The photo appears next to the result.
  • The REST API:
curl -X POST "https://walookup.com/api/v1/check" \
  -H "X-API-Key: sk_your_api_key" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{ "service_type": "ws_avatar", "identifier": "+12345678900" }'
{
  "code": 0,
  "msg": "ok",
  "data": {
    "service_type": "ws_avatar",
    "identifier": "+12345678900",
    "registered": true,
    "avatar": true,
    "avatar_url": "<image url>"
  }
}

Reading the result

Fields Meaning
registered: true, avatar: true, avatar_url set The account is on WhatsApp and a public profile photo was returned.
registered: true, avatar: true, avatar_url empty A photo is set, but no image link was available for this check.
registered: true, avatar: false The account is on WhatsApp but no public photo was returned.
registered: false No WhatsApp account was found for the number at check time.

avatar_url can be an empty string, so read it together with the avatar flag. A check that cannot be decided returns a non-zero code instead of a result.

Why some registered numbers show no photo

WhatsApp users choose who can see their profile photo. When a user limits it to their contacts, hides it, or has no photo at all, there is no public photo to return, and the result is avatar: false even though the account is registered. That is why avatar: false never means "not on WhatsApp" — registration is always reported separately in registered.

Features that come with every lookup

Registration and photo in one request

You do not need a registration check first and a photo lookup second. One request returns both, so a single call is enough to decide what to do with the number.

No contact saving, no WhatsApp login

Checks run on WA Lookup's own infrastructure. You never save the number to a phone, sign in to WhatsApp, scan a QR code, or install an extension. Your own WhatsApp account is not involved, so looking up photos does not put it at risk.

The number owner is not notified

A lookup sends no message, call, or notification to the number, and the owner cannot see that their photo was looked up.

The same answer in the dashboard and the API

The dashboard, the API, and the synchronous multi endpoint (POST /api/v1/batch-check) run the same check against one balance, so what you see while testing is what your integration receives.

100 free checks when you sign up

New accounts get 100 free checks automatically, with nothing to claim. Because the avatar check costs more per number than the registration check, the same free balance covers fewer avatar checks; current prices are on the pricing page. A lookup that cannot be decided does not consume balance.

When a photo lookup is useful

  • Confirming a new lead. A photo that matches the company or person on the form gives a sales team more confidence before the first follow-up.
  • Support and account recovery. An agent can compare the customer's WhatsApp photo with the customer record before discussing an account.
  • CRM enrichment. Storing whether a contact has a public photo — and the photo itself where your policy allows — helps teams recognise contacts in their tools.

Treat the photo as context, not proof: it is chosen by the account holder and does not verify identity, ownership of the number, or consent to be contacted. For whole lists, an asynchronous bulk avatar option is available as an add-on.

Keep it proportionate

A profile photo is personal data in many jurisdictions. Under Article 5 of the GDPR, collect only what your purpose needs: use the registration check (ws) when status is enough, store photos only where your retention policy allows, and never use photo lookups to monitor private individuals. Before any outreach, collect opt-in consent as the WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy requires.

FAQ

Do I need to save the number as a contact to see the photo?

No. The avatar check works from the phone number alone.

Why is the photo missing for a number that is on WhatsApp?

The user may have no photo, or may have limited it to their contacts. The result then shows registered: true with avatar: false.

Does the number owner know their photo was looked up?

No. The lookup sends nothing to the number.

Can I look up photos for several numbers at once?

Yes. Use Multi check in the dashboard or the synchronous multi endpoint for small sets, and the bulk avatar option for whole lists. See the API documentation for current limits.
